When Should You Have an Eye Exam?
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends adults receive an eye exam every 2 years, and adults over 65 have their vision checked yearly. However, everyone is different, so we might recommend a personalized exam schedule based on your needs.
These recommendations may change as your needs change. Come in to get a personal eye care plan started!
What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
Although updating your lens prescription is an important part of the eye exam, we will also assess your overall eye health and provide strategies to help support it.
You can think of your eye exam in 3 parts: the preparation, the exam itself, and the follow-up.
Before we begin, we will update your medical history and keep track of any changes.
- Bring any corrective eyewear you use
- Have a list of medications on hand
- Record any vision problems you have noticed
Your optometrist will conduct a series of tests to evaluate your vision and eye health, including:
- Visual acuity (how clearly you see)
- Refraction (how light enters your eyes)
- Your field of vision
- Colour vision
- Retinal health
We may perform additional tests based on your needs. Feel free to ask us any questions as we go through the exam—your understanding is important to us.
