The Importance of Children’s Eye Exams

Since about 80% of learning materials in the classroom are visual, keeping track of your child’s visual development can help contribute to their success. Kids often do not realize they have vision problems because they assume everyone sees the same way they do.

Eye exams can help catch problems that may go undiagnosed, even if their school offers vision screenings.

Common Signs of Vision Problems for Children

Some common indicators of eye problems include:

  • Red, itchy or watering eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • An eye that consistently turns in or out
  • Squinting, rubbing the eyes, or excessive blinking
  • Lack of concentration
  • Covering or closing one eye
  • Irritability or short attention span
  • Holding objects too close
  • Avoiding books and television
  • Visible frustration or grimacing

Common Eye Problems Children Can Develop

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that:

  • Infants and Toddlers: The first eye exam should happen between 6 and 9 months.
  • Preschool Children: Children between 2 and 5 should have at least one eye exam.
  • School-Aged Children: Children between 6 and 19 should have annual eye exams.

But these are only guidelines. Some eye doctors and pediatricians recommend children, regardless of age, have an eye exam every year because their eyes and vision change so quickly

Amblyopia, or lazy eye, happens when one eye doesn’t see as well as it should because of how it developed during childhood. Sometimes, both eyes can be affected. It’s important to detect and treat amblyopia early in childhood to prevent permanent vision loss or blindness in the affected eye.

Myopia, also called nearsightedness, is a vision problem affecting nearly 30% of Canadians. It causes blurry distance vision and generally develops during childhood.

If your child has myopia, it can affect their academic, sports, and social performance. It’s important they have regular eye exams and get glasses or contact lenses to help them see clearly and comfortably.

Strabismus is when the eyes don’t line up properly. It’s also known as crossed eyes. With strabismus, the eyes don’t align properly and point in different directions. Strabismus usually starts in childhood before age 6.

Astigmatism is a condition where either the cornea or lens is irregularly curved. This irregularity can cause blurry or distorted vision at all distances.
